PROVIDER REVIEW
Direct Energy Review 2026
Direct Energy has served Texas electricity customers since relocating its headquarters to Houston in 2012, and now operates as part of NRG Energy following a $3.625 billion acquisition in 2021. With nearly 4 million customers across North America, the company offers extensive plan variety including prepaid Power-To-Go options. Customer reviews reflect a 4.3-star rating with an NPS of 45, indicating generally positive sentiment. However, 133 PUC complaints over the past 12 months places them slightly above the industry average of 120, suggesting some room for improvement in regulatory matters.
DIRECT ENERGY
Complete Provider Analysis
Direct Energy’s customer service score of 59/100 indicates moderate satisfaction with support interactions, while their billing clarity score of 45/100 suggests some customers find invoices difficult to understand. The company also operates several other Texas brands, including First Choice Power and Bounce Energy. Their Neighbor-to-Neighbor Bill Assistance Program and over $5 million in donations to Texas Children’s Hospital demonstrate community investment, though customers should weigh these factors alongside the mixed service metrics.

Positive Experiences
“I never thought I’d write a review on an electric company. I switch electric providers every year to stay on top of the best rates, and this has been one of my best experiences so far. I recently had to disconnect service for a rental property, and it was so nice to be able to handle the entire process via email. No long hold times or frustrating chats—just a quick, efficient response from a real person. Highly recommend if you value your time.”
“I have been with Direct Energy since September of 2018, always good service. During the freeze of 2021 the power stayed on, while the power on the whole road was out. Since then it has only been out last year in April for about 3 hours due to severe weather and a week ago during early morning hours for 25 minutes. Overall, the service is good. I pay online and have only had to call once for assistance with password. I will not change service to any other power company. Very satisfied.”
“Downloaded the app and I love the bill view, daily usage tracking so I know when to cut usage, notifications, easy pay and payment plan when needed! I forgot they also offer a referral program too!”
“Brayan from Direct Energy came to our home and was very informative about the rates. He took the time to help me understand my bill clearly and made sure I knew exactly what my options were. He was very polite, patient, and answered all of my questions without rushing. He truly helped me make the best decision for my household. Awesome guy.”
“My bills have been way less since I did the Direct Energy Half On/Half Off plan. Sometimes they are less than my water bill!”
Critical Feedback
“Literally the worst company I’ve ever had. I’ve only been with them for 3 months and I’ve already been double charged and toyed with in regards to receiving a refund. I had to hassle them every week just to get a refund that never came. So by the time the next bill was due I demanded it just be credited to my account, just for them to charge the full amount and claim the ‘credit’ hit after payment. Very unprofessional. I would leave if I wasn’t in contract! Definitely do not recommend.”
“Nice people but original plan no longer available at renewal, and was not told it was a 3-year contract. May elect to pay early cancellation fee, which would save me money given my $200 monthly bill for a 1-bedroom 600 sq ft apartment. UPDATE: Called and there are no other plans available. Just be sure to ask questions!”
“I have been a customer with this electric company for over 15 years, and lately the customer service and billing practices have become extremely frustrating. Since the recent ice storm, the company has removed options for deferments or installment plans, which makes it very inconvenient for customers who may need extra time to pay their bill. When I initially called, I was told a deferment might be available later. However, when I called back a week later, I was told it was no longer an option.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
Direct Energy: Recommended
Established provider with extensive plan variety
Direct Energy earns a Recommended rating based on strong customer satisfaction metrics balanced against slightly elevated regulatory activity. As one of North America’s largest retail energy providers backed by NRG Energy, the company delivers on its promise of plan variety and established reliability. Customer sentiment is notably positive, with a 4.3/5.0 star rating and a True NPS of 45, indicating customers are generally willing to recommend the service. The customer service score of 59/100 reflects adequate support, though the billing clarity score of 45/100 suggests room for improvement in invoice transparency. On the regulatory front, 133 PUC complaints over 12 months sits above the industry average of 120, a factor worth noting but not disqualifying given the company’s large customer base. Direct Energy suits those who value options and prefer working with an established national brand.

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
