PROVIDER REVIEW
TXU Energy Review 2026
TXU Energy stands as Texas’s oldest electricity provider, with roots stretching back to 1882 when its predecessor first lit Dallas streets. Now serving approximately 2 million households under parent company Vistra Corp, TXU has built a substantial market presence over its 143-year history. Customer sentiment data shows strong satisfaction with a 4.7-star rating and an NPS of 70, indicating most customers would recommend the provider. However, TXU’s regulatory record shows 368 PUC complaints over the past 12 months, notably above the industry average of 120, suggesting some operational challenges worth considering.
TXU ENERGY
Complete Provider Analysis
TXU Energy differentiates itself through innovative plan structures like Free Nights and Solar Days, appealing to customers seeking flexibility in how they manage electricity costs. The company maintains 24/7 customer support and has demonstrated community commitment through its TXU Energy Aid program, which has distributed over $84 million in assistance since 1983. While the provider earns recognition including J.D. Power customer satisfaction awards, the elevated complaint volume with state regulators indicates potential billing or service issues that prospective customers should weigh against the company’s established reputation.

Positive Experiences
“My care team associate was awesome today. She was incredibly patient and took time to listen to my needs. She used her extensive knowledge to help me so that I didn’t have to keep repeating myself over and over. She was pleasant and courteous throughout our entire chat session. And she made sure that all of my needs were handled in just 1 chat. That was the cherry on top.”
“Quick electric connection with solar panels buyback plan. All done through chat online. Definitely recommend!”
“I wanted a better all-in rate for my service. I used the online Live Chat, Martha helped me find the best plan, and I was very satisfied with the results!”
“TXU customer service is why I have been with them since 2009 and won’t go anywhere else. They are awesome.”
“Oscar Alejandro walked me through the process and explained plans. He was patient, professional, and knowledgeable.”
Critical Feedback
“Unfortunately 1 star is the LEAST I could rate. They don’t specify on the bill about disconnection notice and when we pay to get the power back on, they give a time frame of 2-48 HOURS for it to come back. Absolutely ridiculous! They’re so quick to take your money but slack to turn the power back on. I’m 7 months pregnant, have a 2yr old toddler, and food we can barely afford going bad in the fridge/freezer. We’ve been without power for over 24hrs already in this TX heat!”
“I am extremely displeased with TXU Energy! My dad passed away in January and he was on a horrible plan. I looked for a flat rate plan but didn’t see one. I decided to use a different provider but still paid for the usage. They want to charge my parents’ estate a cancellation fee of $295. I didn’t sign my parents’ contract. I am only the executor of the estate and my parents’ house is now in my name, not theirs. After talking to multiple people in a call center, the issue remains unresolved.”
“The old saying is, ‘Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.’ We signed up with TXU in Houston with a promise of a $200 Visa which we never received. When we inquired, TXU played totally ignorant of the promise. Unfortunately, our residence in Laguna Vista was already hosting TXU when we moved in, so we continued with their service. Upon switching from the original owner they again promised a $220 Visa. Guess what? It never came.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
TXU Energy: Conditionally Recommended
Texas’s legacy provider with mixed regulatory standing
TXU Energy earns a conditional recommendation based on a complex picture of strengths and concerns. As Texas’s oldest electricity provider with roots dating back to 1882, TXU delivers impressive customer satisfaction metrics—a strong 4.7-star rating, excellent NPS of 70, and solid customer service score of 78/100. These figures suggest most customers have positive experiences with the company. However, significant concerns emerge in two areas: billing clarity scores a troubling 30/100, and PUC complaints reached 368 over the past 12 months—more than three times the industry average of 120. This regulatory record warrants attention despite the positive review sentiment. TXU remains a viable choice for customers who prioritize plan variety and provider stability, but prospective customers should carefully review billing terms and monitor their accounts closely.

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
