Positive Experiences
“I just completed my chat session with a TXU online representative, and I want to express my appreciation. Jhoselin, thank you for going above and beyond in helping me with my account issue. Your professionalism, patience, and willingness to assist truly stood out. This is exactly what good customer service looks and feels like.”
“I wanted a better all-in rate for my service. I used the online Live Chat, Martha helped me find the best plan, and I was very satisfied with the results!”
“Chat service director (Santos) and Customer Service Rep (Christobal) were very helpful and thorough at addressing all my concerns and account inquiries. I enjoyed Christobal’s patience as I experienced a few typing errors but nevertheless the customer service was above average. I’m pleased with my plans and service provided today which proves why I have been a long time customer with TXU of 13 years.”
“It was time for my renewal. Maria helped me completely online via chat mode, which I appreciated, as I lost my voice today. 30 years and counting with TXU. With Blessings, Linda”
“Joshua Marcenada was very helpful at providing me with the best plan for my apartment that I’m moving into. I get free nights from 8pm-4:59am. Thank you so much! – Gabriela”
Critical Feedback
“I am extremely displeased with TXU Energy! My dad passed away in January and he was on a horrible plan. I looked to see if there was a flat rate plan but didn’t see one. I decided to use a different provider but still paid for the usage. They want to charge my parents’ estate a cancellation fee of $295. I did not sign my parents’ contract. I am only the executor of the estate and my parents’ house is now in my name, not theirs. After talking to multiple people in a call center, this issue remains unresolved.”
“TXU sent my bill to collections named Global Solution. I paid off my small debt and have not received a payment receipt for them to confirm it. When I talk to TXU they refer me back to the collection agency, and when I talk to the collection agency, they refer me back to TXU saying they basically have nothing else to do with it. Who does business with someone who can’t offer you a receipt after payment? That needs to be fixed.”
“The old saying is, ‘Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.’ We signed up with TXU in Houston with a promise of a $200 Visa which we never received, and when we inquired TXU played totally ignorant of the promise. Unfortunately, our residence in Laguna Vista was already hosting TXU when we moved in, so we continued with their service. Upon switching from the original owner they again promised the $220 Visa. Guess what? It never came.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
TXU Energy: Conditionally Recommended
Texas legacy provider with mixed regulatory record
TXU Energy earns a conditional recommendation based on a complex performance picture. As Texas’s oldest electricity provider with over 140 years of history, the company delivers strong customer satisfaction metrics—a 4.7-star rating, impressive NPS of 69, and solid customer service score of 77/100 suggest most customers have positive experiences. However, two significant concerns emerge: the billing clarity score of just 30/100 indicates customers struggle to understand their bills, and 449 PUC complaints over 12 months—nearly four times the industry average of 120—signals recurring issues that reach the regulatory level. This disconnect between high review scores and elevated complaint volumes suggests that while many customers are satisfied, problems that do arise may be difficult to resolve. TXU suits customers who value an established provider and diverse plan options, but requires careful bill monitoring.

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
