Gexa Energy Review 2026
Gexa Energy has been serving Texas electricity customers since 2002, making it one of the original retail electricity providers when the market opened to competition. Now owned by NextEra Energy, the world’s largest renewable energy generator, Gexa has committed to 100% renewable energy across all residential plans since 2020. Customer sentiment is strong, with a 4.8-star rating and an NPS of 77, indicating high satisfaction. Their PUC complaint volume of 89 over the past year falls below the industry average of 120, suggesting a solid regulatory track record. However, a billing clarity score of 47/100 indicates room for improvement in how customers understand their charges.

Complete Provider Analysis
Gexa Energy’s customer service score of 81/100 reflects generally positive interactions, while their 20-plus years of market experience provides operational stability. Positive Experiences
“I’ve had Gexa as my electrical provider since 1999 and they have always been excellent on comparative pricing. Most customer service reps are also excellent. My most recent CS Rep Sam Alee in Houston was the best. He was professional, thorough, caring, efficient, and very educated on all the plans available! He helped me get the exact and best plan for my needs, explaining all options to me to choose! I highly recommend Gexa Energy and their live (not AI or Chat) customer service agents.”
“Juan gave excellent customer service and directed me to the fixed plan that he researched would best fit my energy needs. As a long-time Gexa customer, this is the level of excellence I have come to expect from this company. For someone in their seventies, in this time of scams and grifters, it’s good to know that I can rely on Gexa. They reward loyalty.”
“Our Customer Service Representative named Lady guided us through the process of choosing the Gexa plan best for our household. Lady was knowledgeable, endlessly patient, and polite as she answered all of our many questions. She let us take our time until we clearly saw the best plan to meet our needs within our budget. Thank you very much, Lady!”
“Henry was very helpful in finding a plan I was comfortable with, even pulling up my historical usage and estimating payments based on the new plan.”
“I could not be happier with my service and pricing from Gexa. My bills average at least $100 less per month than before. If you’re not using them you’re throwing money away. Thanks Gexa!!”
Critical Feedback
“I signed a contract saying 10 cents per kWh. More like 22 cents. Lowest average was 15.5 cents per kWh. Will definitely go somewhere else once my contract expires.”
“Got a fixed rate plan and at the time the rate was competitive. However, I wish I had known that you can’t schedule a payment. You either have to sign up for automatic draft, which I won’t do because I don’t like people accessing my account, or you have to pay on the day you log in. In 2026, I expect a bit more. Even the city agencies provide this option.”
“We canceled our service in late September. What they forgot to tell us is that they still have been taking $9.99 a month for a thermostat subscription—and we have 2 thermostats. When I asked customer service, I was told we should have asked for it to be canceled. So if you cancel, make sure to ask how many contracts you have with them to ensure everything is canceled.”

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
