Gexa Energy Review 2026
Gexa Energy has been serving Texas electricity customers since 2002, making it one of the original retail electric providers when the state deregulated its energy market. Now owned by NextEra Energy, the world’s largest renewable energy generator, Gexa has committed to 100% renewable energy across all residential plans since 2020. Customer sentiment reflects this stability, with a 4.7-star rating and a strong NPS of 74. Their regulatory track record shows just 56 PUC complaints over the past year, well below the industry average of 120. However, their billing clarity score of 44/100 suggests room for improvement in helping customers understand their statements.
GEXA ENERGY
Complete Provider Analysis
Gexa Energy’s two-decade presence in Texas demonstrates staying power in a competitive market. Their customer service score of 79/100 indicates generally positive interactions, while the below-average complaint volume with state regulators reflects operational reliability. The company has served over 1.6 million Texas households since 2001. Prospective customers should note that while overall satisfaction runs high, the lower billing clarity score means reviewing plan details and bill formats carefully before signing up is advisable.

Positive Experiences
“Had a GREAT experience using this company. Customer service people are knowledgeable, helpful, and kind. I loved their app and the screenshot emails to update me on usage throughout the month – there were no surprises! Appreciated the $50 Usage Credit. I used Gexa for a house that I just sold so I cancelled the service today and there was no fee and they got service cancelled the same day. I never thought I’d appreciate an energy company so much but I previously used Green Mountain Energy.”
“Gexa makes signing up easy and the tech is second to none. I had one issue with billing and the Office of the President immediately responded to my concern. It was brought to a satisfactory conclusion. I can’t say enough good things about Gexa.”
“I’ve had Gexa as my electrical provider since 1999 and they have always been excellent on comparative pricing. Most customer service reps are also excellent. My most recent CS Rep Sam Alee in Houston was the best. He was professional, thorough, caring, efficient, and very educated on all the plans available! He helped me get the exact and best plan for my needs, explaining all options to me. I highly recommend Gexa Energy and their live (not AI or Chat) CS agents.”
“My experience with Gexa Energy was terrific! My representative was extremely knowledgeable and helped me select the best plan for me based on my usage. The customer service was above target.”
“I am old, retired and on a fixed income. I did my research and found Gexa Energy and am very pleased with the rates. Thank you.”
Critical Feedback
“They say ‘Don’t hate the player, hate the game’ – as the one played I believe I can hate both. I made several mistakes: #1: I thought being a loyal customer meant I didn’t need to shop around much because this company would give me reasonable rates for staying with them since 2017. Wrong. #2: I didn’t keep track of the contract-end silent month-to-month hike trap. This one hurt for a full year without me noticing. I was too busy to notice.”
“I had been a loyal Gexa Energy customer for years and was enrolled in their EV program, which provided credits for charging my vehicle during nighttime hours. Earlier this year, I was involved in a serious accident and my EV was totaled. I unexpectedly had to purchase a replacement EV. With everything involved in recovering from the accident, dealing with insurance and legal matters, and replacing my vehicle, updating the car in the Gexa app was not an immediate priority. When I eventually tried to update it, I ran into issues.”
“We canceled our service in late September. What they forgot to tell us is that they still have been taking $9.99 a month for a thermostat subscription, and we have 2 thermostats, so $9.99 x 2. When I asked Andrea in customer service, I was told we should have asked for it to be canceled. So if you cancel, make sure to ask how many contracts you have with them to ensure everything is canceled.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
Gexa Energy: Recommended
Strong choice for renewable energy seekers
Gexa Energy earns our recommendation as a reliable renewable energy provider with over two decades of Texas market experience. Backed by NextEra Energy, they’ve built a solid reputation reflected in their impressive 4.7-star rating and exceptional NPS score of 74, indicating strong customer loyalty. Their customer service score of 79/100 suggests responsive support when issues arise. Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
