Green Mountain Review 2026
Green Mountain Energy has built its reputation as one of Texas’s pioneering renewable energy providers since entering the deregulated market. With a 4.2-star rating and a True NPS of 33, customer sentiment leans positive overall. The company’s PUC complaint volume of 116 over the past year falls slightly below the industry average of 120, suggesting a reasonable regulatory track record. However, a Billing Clarity Score of 27/100 and Customer Service Score of 40/100 indicate notable room for improvement in communication and support experiences.
GREEN MOUNTAIN
Complete Provider Analysis
For environmentally conscious Texans, Green Mountain’s focus on clean energy plans remains a key differentiator. The positive NPS reflects that many customers would recommend the provider, likely drawn to its sustainability mission. That said, the low billing clarity score suggests customers may encounter confusion around charges or plan details. Prospective customers should carefully review contract terms and consider reaching out to customer service with questions before signing up to ensure expectations align with the actual experience.

Positive Experiences
“Green Mountain Energy is a trusted company that is very transparent and treats customers with honor and respect. The only company that offers month to month plans with No Cancellation Fee. I signed up at night online and had light the next day. Highly recommend.”
“I’ve used Green Mountain Energy for several years and they have ALWAYS been helpful, knowledgeable and ready to take care of whatever problem I’ve had. The Average Billing program is so helpful. I would recommend Green Mountain to anyone.”
“Haven’t had an issue yet since 2019. Great service – I have had no issues and I don’t think I have ever contacted customer service. The website is easy to maneuver and I entered my service transfers myself. Will continue to use them until otherwise.”
“Miss Allison, the account manager, was great. I spent half the day with different personnel giving me the runaround, but Miss Allison took just a few minutes to solve my problem.”
“Easy process and great plans for customers with solar panels.”
Critical Feedback
“I have called 3 times to log in to my online account, which has been unsuccessful. The company is able to change my password and reset it and navigate through my account, but I can’t access it. The representative keeps telling me each week to try again next week, with all attempts failing. I have been with the company for over 10 years and never had this problem. I renewed my contract and my information was wrong when I verified my account – they had to fix that but I still can’t log in to see my account.”
“Watch out for the bait and switch – they offered a 16.2 kW rate with free nights, then hit me with 0.22 kW and free nights, saying the average was 16.2. I’ve been with them a long time, but this is the second time they pulled something like this. I was a huge fan, but no longer. Customer service just talks with no action. Lack of transparency and dishonesty is high here. They were great many years ago.”
“Avoid this energy company unless you want to pay nearly $100 in pointless/hidden fees. There are other energy companies who will not charge you $80+ in disconnect penalties for being a few days past the due date. They charge these disconnect fees even if you are just late and your services haven’t been interrupted. If I’m late, I expect some form of penalty but $88? Can’t believe they are targeting their own customers with predatory practices.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
Green Mountain: Conditionally Recommended
Solid eco-friendly option with billing transparency concerns
Green Mountain earns a conditional recommendation based on mixed performance across key metrics. The provider maintains a respectable 4.2-star Google rating and a positive NPS of 33, indicating that most customers would recommend the service. Their regulatory record is encouraging, with 116 PUC complaints over the past year falling below the industry average of 120. However, significant concerns emerge in the details: a customer service score of 40/100 suggests room for improvement in support interactions, while a billing clarity score of just 27/100 indicates customers frequently find their bills confusing or unclear. This disconnect between overall satisfaction and billing transparency warrants attention. Green Mountain may work well for customers who prioritize renewable energy options and can navigate billing complexities, but those who value straightforward invoicing should weigh this limitation carefully.

- Positive customer sentiment with NPS score of 33
- Fewer complaints than industry average (116 vs 120)

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
