Positive Experiences
“Austin area – I called TXU because I wanted to discuss my plan, which I’d left alone for twenty years! I knew I could be paying less. I spoke to Mabel on the 1-800 customer service line. Long story short, I switched my plan and it was easy. Mabel was fantastic because she was able to follow me as I was very analytical about this. I wanted to do lots of apples-to-apples comparing and consider worst-case scenarios. She was patient and knowledgeable throughout the entire process.”
“I would like to recognize Kathya at TXU Energy for providing exceptional customer service. She was incredibly helpful with my account this morning and made the entire process smooth and stress-free. Kathya was polite, professional, patient, and accommodating throughout our conversation. She took the time to answer all of my questions, explained everything clearly, and ensured that my concerns were fully addressed. It’s refreshing to speak with someone who genuinely cares about providing excellent service.”
“Had a wonderful experience with Martha at TXU changing my electric plan. She was very knowledgeable and picked a great plan for me for the next year. I was pleased!”
“I am so pleased with your customer service. I was trying to call my previous provider to cancel and couldn’t get through. But your nice staff handled it for me. Thank you. I’m so pleased to be a TXU customer starting today!”
“I got help getting my summer bills averaged out and a great rate. Very satisfied with the service and their willingness to help with the number of options offered.”
Critical Feedback
“Hidden $213 connection fee — never disclosed at sign-up. I signed up for commercial electric service with TXU Energy and was never informed — verbally, in writing, or during the online enrollment process — that a $213 connection fee would be charged to my account. This charge appeared on my first bill with no prior notice, no clear line-item explanation at the time of enrollment, and no opportunity to review or accept it before committing to service. When I contacted customer service, no one could adequately explain or resolve the issue.”
“I was a long-term TXU customer and trusted them to provide a competitive and affordable energy solution. Unfortunately, my experience did not meet those expectations. My electricity costs became unaffordable compared with other options, and since switching providers, I have experienced approximately 37% lower electricity costs. What disappointed me most was being charged two $295 early termination fees, totaling $590. The plans were established by phone with TXU representatives, and the terms were not clearly communicated.”
“Switched from TXU after 5 years because I was massively misquoted my renewal contract rate, my rate this past year has been higher than it used to be, and I never felt like they really listened to what my usage is like to find the right plan, no matter how patient and direct I was. Another provider found me a better, cheaper plan tailored to my needs and got me switched in less than a quarter of the time.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
TXU Energy: Conditionally Recommended
Established reliability with billing transparency concerns
TXU Energy earns a conditional recommendation based on mixed performance across key metrics. As Texas’s oldest electricity provider with over 140 years of history, TXU delivers strong customer satisfaction with an impressive 4.7-star rating and a True NPS of 70, indicating most customers would recommend the service. Their customer service score of 77/100 reflects responsive support. However, significant concerns exist: the billing clarity score of just 31/100 suggests customers frequently encounter confusing statements or unexpected charges. Additionally, 267 PUC complaints over 12 months—more than double the industry average of 120—signals recurring issues that warrant attention. TXU remains a solid choice for customers who value brand recognition and plan variety, but prospective customers should carefully review contract terms and billing structures before committing.

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
