TXU Energy Review 2026
TXU Energy stands as Texas’s oldest electricity provider, with roots tracing back to 1882 when its predecessor first lit Dallas streets. Now serving approximately 1.7-2 million households, TXU maintains a strong customer sentiment profile with a 4.7-star rating and an NPS of 68, indicating solid loyalty among its customer base. However, prospective customers should note that TXU’s 459 PUC complaints over the past 12 months exceeds the industry average of 120, and its billing clarity score of 30/100 suggests room for improvement in transparent communication.

Positive Experiences
“My plan and bills were really getting out of control and putting strain on my family. I used the online chat option to explain my situation to Martha over chat, and without having to call in less than 30 minutes she had a new plan for me, set everything up, and took care of everything right through the chat window on the phone. I feel a lot more confident about my household budget going forward and I’m glad I get to stay with TXU instead of having to switch providers. I’m very happy!”
“I’d like to thank you all at TXU Energy for the loyal service I’ve received in the past ten consecutive years I’ve been with you all. I received my cash back debit card for my savings which comes in handy! This is the most reliable company I’ve ever been with in my 49 years of being on my own. Thank you and God bless all of you that provide the quality services.”
“Martha in particular was very helpful, transparent, and stopped me from making a rash decision. She helped me find a better price and we worked together to find an energy plan that worked for me. I mean it was the same one I had already, but her courtesy and efforts were appreciated nonetheless.”
“The customer service agent named Diego looked deep into my usage and recommended me a plan that would work great for my family. He was patient and compassionate. I’m glad he took his time and actually looked into my usage to see what plan would fit our needs. Thanks!”
“Called to set a new plan up and it was very smooth. The Customer Service Rep Allan was excellent at advising what plan best works for my household based on my current usage. Great Experience!”
Critical Feedback
“Worst experience with an electric company that I’ve had. They had an error with my address in their system which caused issues for months. I spent countless hours on the phone with them trying to resolve the issue, which consisted of awful customer service. They always had an attitude, even worse when they tried to apologize with a monotone ‘I don’t care’ voice. I eventually gave up trying to resolve the problem on their end and cancelled my service.”
“Getting ready to switch to a different company. Got quoted a cheaper price and no delivery charges. I’ll be saving $70 a month. I live in an apartment less than 600 sq/ft and pay around $250 a month or sometimes more. We are rarely home because of work and there is a delivery charge that seems unreasonable for our usage level.”
“I see all of these positive reviews and I must say that I am surprised. Their customer service is hit or miss and they started the relationship with lying to me in order for me to switch electrical providers. No thank you.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
TXU Energy: Conditionally Recommended
Established provider with mixed regulatory record
TXU Energy earns a conditional recommendation based on a split performance profile. As Texas’s oldest electricity provider with over 140 years of history, the company delivers strong customer satisfaction metrics—a 4.7-star rating, impressive NPS of 68, and solid customer service score of 77/100 suggest most customers have positive experiences. However, two significant concerns emerge: the billing clarity score of just 30/100 indicates customers struggle to understand their bills, and 459 PUC complaints over 12 months sits nearly four times above the industry average of 120. This regulatory record warrants attention, even as review sentiment remains favorable. TXU suits customers who prioritize plan variety and established reputation, but those sensitive to billing transparency or concerned about complaint volumes should weigh these factors carefully before committing.
Pros
- Excellent overall rating with 4.7/5.0 star score
- Strong customer loyalty shown by NPS score of 68
- Above average customer service rating (77/100)

Cons

- 211 billing-related complaints suggest confusing statements
- 57 slamming/cramming complaints indicate enrollment concerns
- Bill communications need significant clarity improvements
Best For
- Customers prioritizing provider stability and longevity
- Those seeking extensive plan variety and options

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
