PROVIDER REVIEW
Discount Power Review 2026
Discount Power has built its reputation on affordable electricity rates since launching in Houston in 2008. Now part of the NRG Energy family and serving approximately 250,000 Texas customers, the budget-focused provider maintains an A+ BBB rating. Customer sentiment shows a 3.7-star rating with a -3 NPS score, indicating mixed experiences among users. On the regulatory side, Discount Power recorded 201 PUC complaints over the past 12 months, which exceeds the industry average of 120. Lower billing clarity scores (24/100) suggest some customers find charges difficult to understand.
DISCOUNT POWER
Complete Provider Analysis
Founded by Texas energy industry veterans, Discount Power targets cost-conscious consumers seeking competitive rates without premium features. The provider shares its PUC certificate with sister company Cirro Energy under US Retailers LLC. While the company’s focus on affordability appeals to budget-minded Texans, customer service scores of 31/100 indicate room for improvement in support interactions. Prospective customers should weigh the potential savings against the higher-than-average complaint volume when making their decision.

Positive Experiences
“I have been with Discount Power since they purchased Energy Texas. I shopped around and thought I was going to change providers rather than renew. Their customer service representative found a plan that fit my exact usage at a much better rate than anything I found.”
“Much cheaper rates compared to the company I switched from. My bill lowered by half since switching to Discount Power. Haven’t had any issues thus far. We’re on month 2 with the company. Payments are easy online. I noticed they do have more fees they will potentially charge you for in the event of a payment not going through, etc. But overall, no complaints.”
“Wonderful customer service experience extending contract at the current rate with Discount for 28 months. Very happy with the company breaking down the plan and explaining my options of a solar plan versus the offer extending my current contract. Everything was explained to me and I was asking questions all the way through so I understood. I absolutely would recommend Discount Power.”
“Great experience with Discount Power. The enrollment process was simple and straightforward, and I was able to find a plan that worked well for my needs. Pricing was competitive, and everything was clearly explained upfront. Overall, a smooth process and a reliable option for electricity service.”
“Their service is good, the app helps you keep track of your account daily. When I renewed my contract, they gave me a Ring camera and a wireless, internet-controlled AC controller at no extra cost, which will help me keep energy consumption to a minimum with just one click from my phone.”
Critical Feedback
“PowerNext was purchased by them (Discount Power). 36 month contract that stated I had a $20 early cancellation fee. 24 months into it, I left them. $160 fee on final bill. They have removed where the $20 early cancellation fee was listed under account info. I wish I had taken a screenshot. I recommend passing on this provider. They even asked me to renew before the contract ended, at a much higher rate than they advertise.”
“Worst power provider I’ve ever dealt with – misleading and deceptive pricing. They charge a $9.95 ‘usage charge’ if your consumption is below 1000 kWh, which makes absolutely no sense and is never clearly explained upfront. On top of that, the price per kWh is actually HIGHER when you use less than 1000 kWh. So you are basically punished for conserving energy. None of this was clearly disclosed.”
“Customer service representatives are completely useless. They literally read scripts and do not know how to help if any issues arise that are off script. When you request managers to intervene, it’s more of the same. I’ve used them for 10 years and am finally switching. The past few years have been a constant headache and anytime you call, expect to spend an hour on the phone and quite possibly still not have your problem resolved.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
Discount Power: Use Caution
Low rates come with service trade-offs
Discount Power earns a Use Caution recommendation due to concerning patterns across multiple metrics. While the NRG-backed provider has built its reputation on budget-friendly rates since 2008, customer experience data raises red flags. The 3.7-star rating is middling, and a negative NPS score of -3 suggests more detractors than promoters among their customer base. Particularly troubling are the low service scores: customer service at 31/100 and billing clarity at just 24/100 indicate potential frustration when issues arise. The regulatory picture compounds these concerns, with 201 PUC complaints over 12 months—significantly above the 120-complaint industry average. For shoppers laser-focused on securing the lowest possible rate and comfortable handling occasional billing confusion or service delays, Discount Power may still deliver value. However, those prioritizing a smooth customer experience should explore alternatives.

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
