PROVIDER REVIEW
Green Mountain Review 2026
Green Mountain Energy has built its reputation as one of Texas’s first renewable energy retailers, offering 100% clean energy plans since 1997. With a 4.2-star rating and a Net Promoter Score of 32, customer sentiment leans positive overall. However, the provider shows room for improvement in customer service (40/100) and billing clarity (27/100). On the regulatory side, Green Mountain recorded 122 PUC complaints over the past 12 months, slightly above the industry average of 120, suggesting a mixed but generally stable track record.
GREEN MOUNTAIN
Complete Provider Analysis
Green Mountain appeals to environmentally conscious Texans seeking renewable energy options without sacrificing reliability. While many customers appreciate the company’s sustainability mission and straightforward plan structures, reviews indicate some frustration with billing transparency and customer support responsiveness. Prospective customers should carefully review plan details and electricity facts labels before enrolling to ensure expectations align with actual pricing and terms.

Positive Experiences
“My experience with this company has been great so far. Customer service was excellent yesterday – I had all my questions answered in a timely manner and the best part is I wasn’t transferred to different departments. I spoke with one person, resolved my issue, and I was done. Great job to the young man I spoke with to resolve my issue about my bill!”
“I switched because with Green Mountain I never have had any issues and excellent customer service. I signed up with a Rep outside in front of HEB and I’m so proud I changed. I’ve had Reliant and Direct Energy before. Green Mountain had a cheaper offer. They always call me for updates or if I need anything. They follow-up every year. I’m impressed.”
“Green Mountain Energy is a trusted company that is very transparent and treats customers with honor and respect. The only company that offers month to month plans with No Cancellation Fee. I signed up at night online and had light the next day. Highly recommend.”
“I’ve used Green Mountain Energy for several years and they have ALWAYS been helpful, knowledgeable and ready to take care of whatever problem I’ve had. The Average Billing program is so helpful. I would recommend Green Mountain to anyone.”
“I was very close to moving my service to another company but Green Mountain’s customer service configured a deal I could not refuse. I strongly suggest calling customer service before signing with another provider.”
Critical Feedback
“Have had this company for years up until now. Their rates used to be more reasonable but have recently skyrocketed. The kWh rate on my most recent bill was 19.2 cents, which is crazy. There’s fixed rate plans from other companies that are around 12.5 cents. Charging over 50% more for power is unacceptable and they need to work on getting their rates more competitive.”
“The only good thing about this company are the rates. However, the customer service is so bad it makes you not even want the service. Every time you call to advise a problem or issue, every representative gives the same run around like they’re reading a script. No help at all. Horrible business to use, decent prices.”
“Watch out for the bait and switch. They offered a 16.2 kWh rate with free nights then hit me with 0.22 kWh and free nights, said the average was 16.2. I’ve been with them a long time, but this is the second time they pulled something like this. Customer service just talks, no action. Lack of transparency and dishonesty is high here. They were great many years ago.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
Green Mountain: Conditionally Recommended
Established green energy pioneer with billing concerns
Green Mountain Energy earns a conditional recommendation based on mixed performance across key metrics. The provider maintains a respectable 4.2-star Google rating and a positive NPS of 32, indicating that most customers would recommend their service. However, significant concerns emerge in the details: a customer service score of 40/100 and a notably low billing clarity score of 27/100 suggest frustration with support interactions and confusing invoices. On the regulatory front, Green Mountain logged 122 PUC complaints over the past 12 months, slightly above the industry average of 120—not alarming, but worth noting. As one of Texas’s original renewable energy retailers, they offer genuine green energy options, but customers should be prepared to scrutinize their bills carefully and potentially navigate customer service challenges to resolve issues.

- Positive customer sentiment with NPS score of 32
- Zero service quality complaints filed in 12 months

Cons

- Bill clarity and credit explanations need better documentation

- Customers comfortable reviewing bills in detail
- Those who value brand reputation over lowest price

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
