Positive Experiences
“I have had Green Mountain Energy for several years and continue to be very pleased with the service, the pricing, and customer service.”
“Great providers, been with them 13 years plus. Love the service they provide me and my family. Support is good as well.”
“I’m absolutely so proud my friend told me about Green Mountain Energy and how awesome they are. I was with the same company for over 12 years but knew I must have been getting screwed, and how right I was after talking to Green Mountain Energy. Thank you for taking prompt, immediate care and doing all the work for me. I look forward to many years of service to come.”
“They are always very knowledgeable and the bill is understandable, clear. No hidden fees. My bill has been $190 to $238. I was with TXU since 1969, they just continued to increase their bill – last one from TXU was $350. So I changed to Green Mountain and I am very happy with the company.”
“Their customer service went above and beyond to help us out. I would recommend this company anytime! If you want 100% customer service and expectations met, this company is just that! I don’t ever recommend anyone or anything but this company has changed that by far! Thank you GME for everything!”
Critical Feedback
“I have been a loyal customer with GME for over 11 years. I finally moved to a new location and was planning to transfer service. After speaking with several agents, I was advised they don’t service my new address. I was devastated but had to cancel service after so many years. Because of this, several agents told me I would not get hit with a cancellation fee. GME has always treated me right so I didn’t think my experience would change so quickly. I was hit with a bill over $80.”
“Like a bad romance, it started out great and now I wish we’d never met. They now nickel and dime for everything. $20 to notify you they’re going to disconnect your service, a separate late fee, and customer service reps whose first language isn’t English. Originally, you could extend or delay your payment without paying $20 to be notified they will disconnect service after 10 days past due. They and Reliant are sister companies under NRG. Definitely not renewing my contract with them.”
“Terrible customer service. They don’t follow their own policies. They tried to convince me that the 24-48 hours they quoted for document verification was actually 24-48 ‘business hours’ (which is not a thing anywhere). Customer service rep confirmed 3 times that I would 100% have service on Friday and I did not. They can’t turn on service over the weekend so I had to wait until Monday. DO NOT USE!”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
Green Mountain: Conditionally Recommended
Green energy pioneer with room for billing improvement
Green Mountain Energy earns a conditional recommendation based on mixed but generally positive performance metrics. The provider maintains a respectable 4.1-star Google rating and a positive NPS of 29, indicating more customers would recommend them than not. Their regulatory record is notably strong, with just 70 PUC complaints over the past year—well below the industry average of 120—suggesting relatively few issues escalate to formal disputes. However, customer feedback reveals areas of concern: the billing clarity score of 26/100 points to confusion around charges and invoices, while the customer service score of 39/100 suggests inconsistent support experiences. As a renewable energy-focused provider, Green Mountain appeals to environmentally conscious consumers willing to potentially pay premium rates. Those prioritizing green energy credentials and regulatory compliance will find value here, though customers who demand crystal-clear billing or exceptional service response may want to weigh alternatives.

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
