PROVIDER REVIEW
Green Mountain Review 2026
Green Mountain Energy has built its reputation as one of Texas’s pioneering renewable energy providers since entering the deregulated market in 1997. Customer reviews reflect a 4.2-star rating with a Net Promoter Score of 33, indicating generally positive sentiment among subscribers. However, the provider’s billing clarity score of 27/100 suggests some customers find their statements confusing. On the regulatory side, Green Mountain recorded 125 PUC complaints over the past 12 months, slightly above the industry average of 120, signaling room for improvement in dispute resolution.

Positive Experiences
“Green Mountain Energy is a trusted company that is very transparent and treats customers with honor and respect. The only company that offers month to month plans with No Cancellation Fee. I signed up at night online and had light the next day. Highly recommend.”
“I’ve used Green Mountain Energy for several years and they have ALWAYS been helpful, knowledgeable and ready to take care of whatever problem I’ve had. The Average Billing program is so helpful. I would recommend Green Mountain to anyone.”
“Haven’t had an issue yet since 2019. Great service – I have had no issues and I don’t think I have ever needed to contact customer service. The website is easy to maneuver and I entered my service transfers myself. Will continue to use them until otherwise.”
“Miss Allison, account manager, was great. I spent half the day with different personnel giving me the run around, but Miss Allison took just a few minutes to solve my problem.”
“Easy process and great plans for customers with solar panels.”
Critical Feedback
“I have called 3 times to log in to my online account, which has been unsuccessful. The company can change my password and reset it, and navigate through my account, but I can’t access it. The representatives keep telling me each week to try again next week, with all attempts failing. I have been with the company for over 10 years and never had this problem. I renewed my contract and my information was wrong when I verified my account – they had to fix that but I still can’t log in to see my account.”
“Poor communication! I chatted with an agent January 3rd or 4th to cancel my service since I was moving to an area where Green Mountain Energy does not operate. Only on January 13th did I find out my service was not canceled. I called to find out what happened and was told the person in the chat didn’t receive all the information and was not able to cancel my service. No one communicated that they did not receive all the information, and I was told there’s nothing they can do about it.”
“Watch out for the bait and switch – they offered a 16.2 KW rate with free nights, then hit me with 0.22 KW and free nights, saying the average was 16.2. I’ve been with them a long time, but this is the second time they pulled something like this. I was a huge fan, but no longer. Customer service just talks with no action. Lack of transparency and dishonesty is high here. They were great many years ago.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
Green Mountain: Conditionally Recommended
Eco-friendly option with billing transparency concerns
Green Mountain earns a conditional recommendation based on mixed performance across key metrics. The provider maintains a solid 4.2-star Google rating and a positive NPS of 33, indicating that most customers are satisfied with their overall experience. However, significant concerns emerge in specific areas: the billing clarity score of 27/100 suggests customers frequently struggle to understand their charges, and the customer service score of 40/100 indicates room for improvement in support interactions. On the regulatory front, Green Mountain logged 125 PUC complaints over the past 12 months, slightly above the industry average of 120—a modest concern but not alarming. This provider may work well for customers who prioritize green energy options and don’t mind occasional billing complexity, but those requiring straightforward bills and responsive support should weigh these limitations carefully.
Pros
- Strong 4.2 out of 5 star rating indicates quality
- Positive customer sentiment with NPS score of 33
- Zero service quality complaints filed with PUC
- Minimal slamming and cramming issues (only 5 complaints)

Cons
- Customer service needs improvement at 40 out of 100
- Billing transparency very low at 27 out of 100
- PUC complaints above industry average (125 vs 120)
- 60 billing-related complaints suggest confusing statements
- Bill notifications and credit explanations need clarity
Best For
- Customers prioritizing renewable energy plans
- Those comfortable reviewing bills carefully for accuracy
- Environmentally-conscious consumers willing to accept some service trade-offs
- Customers who rarely need to contact support
- Those who value green energy credentials over billing simplicity

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
