PROVIDER REVIEW
Frontier Utilities Review 2026
Frontier Utilities has served Texas electricity customers since 2008, establishing itself as one of the few providers offering full bilingual English and Spanish customer support. With a 4.8-star rating and a strong NPS of 75, customer sentiment trends positive, particularly regarding their 60-Day Happiness Guarantee and lower $100 early termination fee. Their regulatory record shows 69 PUC complaints over the past year, below the industry average of 120. However, the Billing Clarity Score of 46/100 suggests some customers find their bills difficult to understand.

Their bilingual support team and no-deposit options appeal to underserved markets, while rates typically run 20-30% below major competitors like TXU and Reliant. The customer service score of 80/100 reflects generally positive interactions, though the lower billing clarity score indicates room for improvement in invoice transparency. Prospective customers should carefully review plan documents and fee structures before enrolling.

Positive Experiences
“I’ve been with Frontier for 2 years now and never have any issues! Their customer service reps go above and beyond to help me out with any questions or concerns I have. I recently spoke with Franco about my upcoming renewal and he went over the best options for me and even got me a credit on my account! He answered all my questions and went into detail on all of the options. Thank you!”
“Frontier Utilities has truly exceeded my expectations. Their customer-focused approach is outstanding, and it shows in every interaction. From the moment I signed up, their team has been responsive, professional, and genuinely committed to making the experience smooth and stress-free. Their rates are competitive, their billing is transparent, and their communication is consistently clear. I especially appreciate how quickly they address questions and how willing they are to go the extra mile.”
“I have been a customer for 10 years or more and Frontier is one of the companies I will never change! Their service is excellent, customer service reps are friendly and professional and I just have a great experience with them.”
“I’ve been with Frontier Utilities for one year and recently renewed. They have competitive rates, their customer service representatives are friendly and very helpful. If you’re shopping rates, give them a call.”
“They provide me with good electrical service and I like their web-based dashboard of my account. It provides me with the information that I need.”
Critical Feedback
“Horrendous experience trying to transfer service from one address to a new address. This is not something you can do online, which is such an outdated way of handling things. A change of address for service should be easy to process online. I had to call their customer support line and spent over an hour trying to get the transfer done before I gave up. They need to make their transfer of service much more streamlined and stop operating with out-of-date systems.”
“The phone agent was very nice but did not properly explain the contract. He told me it was 17.6 cents per kWh at 2000+ kWh but the price was 11 cents. He never explained there was a 6 cent fee on top of that and that the price was actually sliding – 18.4 cents at 500 kWh, 17.9 at 1000, and 17.6 at 2000. I asked him multiple times to confirm the price was 11 cents per kWh and he confirmed. The actual pricing structure was very different from what was explained.”
“I have had service with them for over a year, got enrolled in a 2-year plan automatically that I did not want. Was told if I switch providers I’ll pay an early termination fee. Now I got a late payment fee when I sent them a payment. Starting to think this is a bait and switch company. Will be looking at other companies, and if I lose $300 to go somewhere else, it may be worth it.”

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
