Their customer service score of 80/100 demonstrates responsive support, though their billing clarity score of 45/100 suggests room for improvement in invoice transparency. FRONTIER UTILITIES
Complete Provider Analysis
Frontier differentiates itself through its 60-Day Happiness Guarantee and $100 early termination fee, among the lowest in Texas. Their no-deposit options and rates typically 20-30% below major competitors like TXU and Reliant make them accessible to budget-conscious customers. Spanish-speaking households particularly benefit from their full bilingual support—a rarity among Texas REPs. However, customers should review bills carefully given the lower billing clarity scores reported in reviews.

Positive Experiences
“I needed an electric company fast when I moved into an apartment, and didn’t have time to research much. But I have nothing but praise for them since they allowed me to switch my plan several times with no penalties. Since there was an issue with my A/C unit, it caused my bills to be higher than they should be. Customer service got me on the best plans until my A/C issue was resolved. I now receive relatively low energy costs considering I’m in the summer heat. And their app allows you to see and track your usage.”
“I’ve been with Frontier for 2 years now and never have any issues! Their customer service reps go above and beyond to help me out with any questions or concerns I have. I recently spoke with Franco about my upcoming renewal and he went over the best options for me and even got me a credit on my account! He answered all my questions and went into detail on all of the options. Thank you!”
“I initially had a very frustrating experience with Frontier Utilities. I was incorrectly charged around $100 for electricity service that I never used, and after speaking with two customer service representatives, my issue still wasn’t resolved. It was extremely disappointing. Thankfully, Joselyn, the Office President, personally reached out to me. She listened carefully, understood the situation right away, and resolved everything professionally and respectfully.”
“They provide me with good electrical service and I like their web-based dashboard of my account. It provides me with the information that I need.”
“My one star is definitely becoming a 5 star! An amazing supervisor tried to reach me over 2 days and finally connected. They addressed my concerns about high rates and rude customer service, and truly worked to make things right. When management gets involved, they really do care about providing a better customer service experience.”
Critical Feedback
“I’ve been a Frontier Utilities customer for years. While I don’t always make my payment on the exact due date, I always pay my bill within a reasonable amount of time. I understand and accept the 5% late fee—that’s fair if I’m late. What I don’t understand is why Frontier charges a $25 disconnection fee the very next day after adding the 5% fee, with no grace period whatsoever. Between the late fee and the disconnection fee, I’m paying around $40 in extra charges for being only a few days late.”
“The phone agent was very nice but did not properly explain the contract. He told me it was 17.6 cents per kWh, but if I used 2000+ kWh the price was 11 cents. He never explained that there was a 6 cent fee on top of that and that the price was actually sliding—18.4 per kWh at 500, 17.9 at 1000, and 17.6 at 2000. I asked him multiple times to confirm the price was 11 cents per kWh and he confirmed. The pricing structure wasn’t clearly communicated.”
“I have had service with them for over a year, got enrolled in a 2-year plan automatically that I did not want. Was told if I switch providers I’ll pay an early termination fee. Now I got a late payment fee when I sent them a payment. Starting to think this is a bait and switch company. Will be looking at other companies and if I lose $300 to go somewhere else, it may be worth it.”

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
