Cirro Energy Review 2026
Cirro Energy has served Texas electricity customers since 2001, making it one of the original retail electric providers when the market opened to competition. Now backed by Fortune 500 parent NRG Energy, the company emphasizes straightforward pricing with its ‘fair prices, simple plans, no surprises’ approach. Customer sentiment shows a 4.0-star rating with an NPS of 24, indicating moderate satisfaction. However, with 217 PUC complaints over the past 12 months—above the industry average of 120—prospective customers should weigh the company’s established presence against its regulatory track record.

Positive Experiences
“I switched from TXU years ago ($350) and my electricity bill is on average under $100. Awesome company to use.”
“Just want to let Cirro Energy management know I appreciate them keeping their promise for a $50 discount. Credit was added to my account immediately. Thank you very much. Other than that, very dependable service at a good price. I remember during the terrible winter storm when most of Texas electricity was shut down for days, I had electricity throughout the storm except for a few times it went out but it came back really quick. Thank you Cirro for keeping me safe through trying times. I will be with Cirro as long as possible.”
“I have been with them for years and always get great rates. My bills are always lower than other folks when the conversation about electricity comes up.”
“Cirro Energy is the best company I’ve been with yet. Customer service is always on point, they fix you up right then and there. I had one problem one time and I tell you they fixed it in a matter of minutes. Thanks Cirro, I do recommend!”
“I was able to ask my question and get an answer quickly using the chat feature.”
Critical Feedback
“Absolutely horrible company to deal with. Their representatives are not helpful whatsoever and because of their representative’s mistake it cost me an extra $200 that they kept promising me they’d refund. When I call to get what I’m owed they keep coming up with lies and zero solutions. I’ve been dealing with this since October and it’s now January. I will never use or recommend this company again.”
“Please do not use Cirro Energy. This company is misleading. My normal consumption is around 1000 kWh every month. They give a $125 bill credit for 1000 kWh. For my first bill they only billed me for 26 days which was below 1000 kWh so I could not get the $125 bill credit. When I called customer service they could not provide me a reasonable answer. The second bill was for 35 days so the bill was for 1228 kWh. For 1000 kWh the bill should have been around $99 as they advertise.”
“Horrible service. When I canceled my service because I was moving, I let them know I wouldn’t have a forwarding address. I had always received my bills through email. Fast forward 5 months, my credit score dropped 44 points because they sent me to collections. They gave me a last bill for a few days that I wasn’t aware of. They never called, never emailed, never tried to get ahold of me. Customer service said they send a paper bill for the last month. I moved! I was never late for a payment.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
Cirro Energy: Conditionally Recommended
Simple plans, but service scores need improvement
Cirro Energy earns a conditional recommendation based on mixed performance across key metrics. The provider delivers on its promise of straightforward, no-frills electricity plans backed by Fortune 500 parent NRG Energy, which provides financial stability and reliability. Customer sentiment shows a respectable 4.0/5.0 star rating and a positive NPS of 24, indicating more promoters than detractors among their customer base. However, concerns emerge in the details: customer service scores (37/100) and billing clarity scores (27/100) suggest room for improvement in day-to-day interactions. Separately, 217 PUC complaints over 12 months—nearly double the industry average of 120—signals potential issues worth noting. Cirro works best for customers who prioritize simple pricing structures and corporate backing over premium customer service, and who prefer a set-it-and-forget-it approach to their electricity plan.

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
