Cirro Energy Review 2026
Cirro Energy has been serving Texas electricity customers since 2001, making it one of the original retail electricity providers when the market opened to competition. Now backed by Fortune 500 parent company NRG Energy, Cirro maintains an A+ BBB rating and serves over 150,000 customers with its ‘fair prices, simple plans, no surprises’ approach. Customer sentiment shows a 4.0-star rating with a True NPS of 24, indicating moderate satisfaction. However, with 217 PUC complaints over the past 12 months—above the industry average of 120—prospective customers should weigh this regulatory track record alongside the company’s straightforward pricing philosophy.

Complete Provider Analysis
Cirro Energy’s Smart Lock plans offer fixed-rate options spanning 12, 24, or 36 months, with green energy integrated into every plan. While the company’s billing clarity score of 27/100 and customer service score of 37/100 suggest room for improvement in these areas, Cirro’s long-standing market presence and corporate backing through NRG Energy provide operational stability that newer providers may lack.

Positive Experiences
“I switched from TXU years ago ($350) and my electricity bill is on average under $100. Awesome company to use.”
“Just want to let Cirro Energy management know thank you for keeping their promise for a $50 discount. Credit was added to my account immediately. Very dependable service at a good price. I remember during the terrible winter storm when most of Texas electricity was shut down for days, I had electricity throughout the storm except for a few brief outages that were restored really quick. Thank you Cirro for keeping me safe through trying times. I will be with Cirro as long as possible.”
“I have been with them for years and always get great rates. My bills are always lower than other folks when the conversation about electricity comes up.”
“Cirro Energy is the best company I’ve been with yet. Customer service is always on point, they fix you up right then and there. I had one problem one time and I tell you they fixed it in a matter of minutes. Thanks Cirro, I do recommend!”
“I was able to ask my question and get an answer quickly using the chat feature.”
Critical Feedback
“Absolutely horrible company to deal with. Their representatives are not helpful whatsoever, and because of their representative’s mistake, it cost me an extra $200 that they kept promising me they’d refund. When I call to get what I’m owed, they keep coming up with lies and zero solutions. I’ve been dealing with this since October and it’s now January. I will never use or recommend this company again.”
“Please do not use Cirro Energy. This company is scamming customers. My normal consumption is around 1000 kWh every month. They give a $125 bill credit for 1000 kWh. For my first bill, they only billed me for 26 days which was below 1000 kWh, so I couldn’t get the $125 bill credit. When I called customer service, they couldn’t provide a reasonable answer. The second bill was for 35 days so it was 1228 kWh. For 1000 kWh the bill should have been around $99 as advertised.”
“Worst company ever! If you don’t pay by the due date, you’re charged 5% of the balance plus a $50 disconnect notice fee that’s emailed to you. It doesn’t matter if you set up a payment extension. When I asked them to move the due date so I could pay on time since I’m paid on the first every month, they said it’s not available and to call back in a few weeks with no reason given.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
Cirro Energy: Conditionally Recommended
Simple plans with corporate backing, but service gaps exist
Cirro Energy earns a conditional recommendation based on mixed performance data. As an NRG Energy subsidiary, Cirro delivers on its promise of straightforward, no-frills electricity plans backed by Fortune 500 stability. The 4.0-star rating and positive NPS of 24 indicate generally satisfied customers who appreciate the company’s simple approach. However, significant concerns emerge in the details. The customer service score of 37/100 and billing clarity score of 27/100 suggest room for improvement in day-to-day interactions. More notably, 217 PUC complaints over the past 12 months—nearly double the industry average of 120—signals recurring issues that warrant attention. Cirro works best for customers who prioritize plan simplicity over premium service and who feel comfortable with self-service account management. Those requiring frequent support may want to explore alternatives.

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
