Positive Experiences
“I never thought I’d write a review on an electric company. I switch electric providers every year to stay on top of the best rates, and this has been one of my best experiences so far. I recently had to disconnect service for a rental property, and it was so nice to be able to handle the entire process via email. No long hold times or frustrating chats—just a quick, efficient response from a real person. Highly recommend if you value your time.”
“I have been with Direct Energy since September of 2018, always good service. During the freeze of 2021 the power stayed on, while the power on the whole road was out. Since then it has only been out last year in April for about 3 hours due to severe weather and a week ago during early morning hours for 25 minutes. Overall, the service is good. I pay online and have only had to call once for assistance with password. I will not change service to any other power company. Very satisfied.”
“Downloaded the app and I love the bill view, daily usage tracker so I know when to cut usage, notifications, easy pay and payment plan when needed! I forgot they offer a referral program too!”
“Brayan from Direct Energy came to our home and was very informative about the rates. He took the time to help me understand my bill clearly and made sure I knew exactly what my options were. He was very polite, patient, and answered all of my questions without rushing. He truly helped me make the best decision for my household. Awesome guy!”
“My bills have been way less since I did the Direct Energy Half On/Half Off plan. Sometimes they are less than my water bill!”
Critical Feedback
“After being harassed by 8am phone calls for 2 weeks we made the decision to renew. We were told early cancellation was $165, just to get our final bill with the early cancellation fee being changed to $395. Avoid this company.”
“Nice people but original plan no longer available at renewal; and was not told it was a 3-year contract. May elect to pay early cancellation fee, saving me money given $200 monthly bill for a 1-bedroom, 600 sq feet apartment. UPDATE: Called and there are no other plans available. Just be sure to ask questions!”
“I have been a customer with this electric company for over 15 years, and lately the customer service and billing practices have become extremely frustrating. Since the recent ice storm, the company has removed options for deferments or installment plans, which makes it very inconvenient for customers who may need extra time to pay. When I initially called, I was told a deferment might be available later. However, when I called back a week later, I was told it was no longer available.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
Direct Energy: Recommended
Strong plan variety from established national provider
Direct Energy earns a Recommended rating based on solid customer satisfaction metrics balanced against some operational concerns. With a 4.3-star rating and True NPS of 46, customer sentiment runs positive, and the customer service score of 59/100 suggests adequate support for most needs. As one of North America’s largest retail energy providers backed by NRG Energy, Direct Energy offers extensive plan variety that few competitors can match. However, there are areas requiring attention: the billing clarity score of 45/100 indicates customers sometimes find invoices confusing, and 165 PUC complaints over 12 months exceeds the industry average of 120. These regulatory filings suggest occasional friction points in the customer experience. That said, for customers who value choice and the stability of an established provider, Direct Energy delivers a reliable option—just review your bills carefully and don’t hesitate to contact support with questions.

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
