PROVIDER REVIEW
Frontier Utilities Review 2026
Frontier Utilities has served Texas electricity customers since 2008, establishing itself as one of the few providers offering full bilingual English and Spanish customer support. With a 4.8-star rating and a Net Promoter Score of 75, customer sentiment data shows strong overall satisfaction. The company’s regulatory record is also notable, with just 56 PUC complaints over the past 12 months—well below the industry average of 120. However, a Billing Clarity Score of 45/100 suggests some customers find their bills difficult to understand, an area worth monitoring.
FRONTIER UTILITIES
Complete Provider Analysis
Houston-based Frontier Utilities differentiates itself through flexibility, offering no-deposit options and a relatively low $100 early termination fee compared to many competitors. The company’s 60-Day Happiness Guarantee and rates typically 20-30% below major providers like TXU and Reliant appeal to budget-conscious shoppers. While the Customer Service Score of 80/100 reflects generally positive interactions, prospective customers should review plan documents carefully given the lower billing clarity scores reported by some users.

Positive Experiences
“I’ve been with Frontier for 2 years now and never have any issues! Their customer service reps go above and beyond to help me out with any questions or concerns I have. I recently spoke with Franco about my upcoming renewal and he went over the best options for me and even got me a credit on my account! He answered all my questions and went into detail on all of the options. Thank you!”
“I have been a customer for 10 years or more and Frontier is one of the companies I will never change! Their service is excellent, customer service reps are friendly and professional and I just have a great experience with them.”
“I initially had a very frustrating experience with Frontier Utilities. I was incorrectly charged around $100 for electricity service that I never used, and after speaking with two customer service representatives, my issue still wasn’t resolved. Thankfully, Joselyn, the Office President, personally reached out to me. She listened carefully, understood the situation right away, and resolved everything professionally and respectfully.”
“I’ve been with Frontier Utilities for one year and recently renewed. They have competitive rates, their customer service representatives are friendly, and very helpful. If you’re shopping rates, give them a call.”
“They provide me with good electrical service and I like their web-based dashboard of my account. It provides me with the information that I need.”
Critical Feedback
“The phone agent was very nice but did not properly explain the contract. He told me it was 17.6 cents per kWh, but never explained that there was a 6 cent fee on top of that and that the price was actually sliding – 18.4 per kWh at 500, 17.9 at 1000, and 17.6 at 2000. I asked him multiple times if the price was 11 cents per kWh and he confirmed. The pricing structure was not clearly communicated.”
“I have had service with them for over a year, got enrolled in a 2 year plan automatically that I did not want. Was told if I switch providers I’ll pay an early termination fee. Now I got a late payment fee when I sent them a payment. Starting to think this is a bait and switch company. Will be looking at other companies and if I lose $300 to go somewhere else, it may be worth it.”
“Horrendous experience trying to transfer service from one address to a new address. This is not something you can do online, which is such an outdated way of handling things. I had to call their customer support line and spent over an hour trying to get transfer service done before I gave up. They need to make their transfer of service much more streamlined and stop operating with out of date systems.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
Frontier Utilities: Recommended
Excellent service for Spanish-speaking customers seeking flexibility
Frontier Utilities earns our recommendation as a solid choice in the Texas electricity market. Founded in 2008 in Houston, this provider has built a strong reputation around bilingual service and flexible contract terms. Customer sentiment is notably positive, with an impressive 4.8/5.0 star rating and a True NPS Score of 75, indicating high customer loyalty. Their customer service score of 80/100 reflects their commitment to responsive support. However, billing clarity scores just 45/100, suggesting invoices may be confusing for some customers. On the regulatory front, Frontier performs well with only 56 PUC complaints over the past 12 months—less than half the industry average of 120. This combination of strong customer satisfaction, below-average complaint volume, and specialized bilingual support makes Frontier particularly well-suited for Spanish-speaking households and those who value plan flexibility over billing simplicity.

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
