JUST ENERGY
Complete Provider Analysis
Just Energy’s customer feedback reveals a mixed picture. While overall satisfaction remains positive, the Billing Clarity Score of 15/100 and Customer Service Score of 46/100 suggest room for improvement in these areas. The company emerged from 2021 bankruptcy restructuring following Winter Storm Uri and is currently being acquired by IGS Energy, which will create one of North America’s largest energy retailers serving 7.5 million customers. This transition may bring operational changes worth monitoring.

Positive Experiences
“Sabrina Simpson was very helpful, professional, friendly and knowledgeable. She showed me how I can save money on my energy bill by becoming a Just Energy customer. And because of her energy and enthusiasm and salesmanship, I will now become a new customer of this company. Thank you Sabrina!”
“The Representative Laverne was great! She took time to explain everything with me, she was pleasant to talk to, and most of all I could understand what she was communicating to me. Thank you for your help and hopefully I won’t regret this decision to change my service provider.”
“It was nice to meet Luis. He is very knowledgeable, patient, kind and timely. Hoping all is as stated and we save money on our electricity bills for the next 2 years of this contract. I’m excited!”
“We had a good experience getting to know Cheyenne, our sales person for the new energy company we signed up with at Sam’s tonight. He did an excellent job winning us over from TXU, who we have been with for many years.”
“I’ve been a Just Energy customer before and I liked the way they treated me, so I came back. The person who took my order was very nice. Overall good experience.”
Critical Feedback
“Ok priced plans, but constant issues verifying my account when contacting them because the phone agent that signed me up spelled my name wrong even after I spelled it out to them. A year later and multiple contacts about getting my name fixed, they keep saying it is fixed or have some reason about why it’s not updating. If you can’t even update my first name after a year of calls and chats, then you don’t deserve to take my money.”
“BUYER BEWARE. When I signed up, they offered a lower rate. Sales guy was friendly. They offered to pay my early termination fee from previous company. Fast forward, first bill they charge a 4.5% delivery fee in addition to rate, plus other taxes and fees. Their delivery rate is what increases it significantly. The customer service is hard to reach and they aren’t customer friendly. They do not try to compromise or work with your requests.”
“I am a senior citizen and have made repeated, good-faith attempts to contact a live customer service representative in order to make a payment. On each occasion, I was subjected to extended wait times exceeding thirty minutes and was unable to reach a live agent. This failure has persisted continuously for approximately five to six months. I have been prevented from making timely payments as a result.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
Just Energy: Conditionally Recommended
Established brand with mixed regulatory track record
Just Energy earns a conditional recommendation based on a split between strong customer satisfaction and elevated regulatory concerns. As a major multinational energy marketer founded in 1997, the company brings stability and experience to the Texas market. Customer reviews are notably positive, with a 4.4/5.0 star rating and a True NPS of 53, indicating most customers would recommend the service. However, the billing clarity score of just 15/100 signals significant room for improvement in transparent pricing communication. Most concerning is the PUC complaint volume of 253 over the past 12 months—more than double the industry average of 120. This disconnect between positive reviews and regulatory complaints suggests issues may arise that don’t always surface until escalation. Customers who carefully review contract terms and monitor bills closely will likely have a positive experience with Just Energy’s fixed-rate and renewable options.

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
