TXU ENERGY
Complete Provider Analysis
TXU Energy’s 143-year Texas heritage provides operational scale that few competitors can match. Customer service scores a solid 77/100 in review analysis, though billing clarity rated lower at 30/100, suggesting some customers find statements difficult to interpret. The company’s TXU Energy Aid program has distributed over $84 million in assistance since 1983, demonstrating community investment. Multiple J.D. Power recognitions support its reputation, though the elevated PUC complaint volume warrants consideration when comparing providers.

Positive Experiences
“My plan and bills were really getting out of control and putting strain on my family. I used the online chat option to explain my situation to Martha, and without having to call, in less than 30 minutes she had a new plan for me, set everything up, and took care of everything right through the chat window on the phone. I feel a lot more confident about my household budget going forward and I’m glad I get to stay with TXU instead of having to switch providers. I’m very happy!”
“I like to thank you all at TXU Energy for the loyal service I’ve received in the past ten consecutive years I’ve been with you all. I received my cash back debit card for my savings which comes in handy! This is the most reliable company I’ve ever been with in my 49 years of being on my own. Thank you and God bless all of you that provide the quality services.”
“The customer service agent named Diego looked deep into my usage and recommended me a plan that would work great for my family. He was patient and compassionate. I’m glad he took his time and actually looked into my usage to see what plan would fit our needs. Thanks!”
“Martha in particular was very helpful, transparent, and stopped me from making a rash decision. She helped me find a better price and we worked together to find an energy plan that worked for me. Her courtesy and efforts were appreciated nonetheless.”
“David Fernando provided me with excellent assistance today as I made a decision on renewal of the TXU Electricity Plan for 2026. David was knowledgeable and very patient. He answered all of my questions and made me feel like a valued customer.”
Critical Feedback
“Worst experience with an electric company that I’ve had. They had an error with my address in their system which caused issues for months. I spent countless hours on the phone with them trying to resolve the issue, which consisted of awful customer service. They always had an attitude, even worse when they tried to apologize with a monotone “I don’t care” voice. I eventually gave up trying to resolve the problem on their end and cancelled my service.”
“Getting ready to switch to a different company. Got quoted a cheaper price and no delivery charges. I live in an apartment less than 600 sq/ft and pay around $250 a month or sometimes more. We are rarely home because of work and there is a delivery charge. The costs just don’t add up for our small space and usage.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
TXU Energy: Conditionally Recommended
Established reliability with billing transparency concerns
TXU Energy earns a conditional recommendation based on mixed performance indicators. As Texas’s oldest electricity provider with over 140 years of history, they offer unmatched plan variety and established reliability. Customer sentiment is notably strong, with an impressive 4.7-star rating and a True NPS of 68, indicating high customer loyalty. Their customer service score of 77/100 reflects responsive support. However, significant concerns exist: the billing clarity score of just 30/100 suggests customers struggle to understand their charges, and 407 PUC complaints over 12 months—more than triple the industry average of 120—cannot be ignored. This regulatory record indicates systemic issues that potential customers should weigh carefully. TXU suits those who prioritize working with an established provider and value plan options, but customers should monitor bills closely and document all interactions.

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
